United Way Worldwide’s U.S. President Stacey Stewart recently addressed the Positioned for Progress Conference attendees about United Way’s role in community change and the value of community collaboration to create the most effective change. The United Way network defines that as Collective Impact: The commitment of a group of important actors from different sectors coming together around a common agenda to solve a specific social problem. If your organization works with children over the summer break, let us show you how you can incorporate reading into the good work you’re already doing. It’s fun and it helps your kids keep their reading skills sharp while out of the classroom. Please make plans to attend an informative training session on May 14th.

When Kids Read, Kids Succeed

United Way, the Jackson Zoo, Mississippi Public Broadcasting, the Jackson-Hinds Library System, and others helped JPS kick off their third annual One Jackson…Many Readers, a program that supports and encourages creating a culture of reading over the summer break. WLBT’s Maggie Wade serves as OJMR Ambassador this year. She entertained third graders from Lee Elementary with story time.

There will be a Summer Reading parent orientation at each branch in the Jackson-Hinds Library System (Charles Tisdale excluded) on Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Donate books for students’ Summer Reading assignments

United Way is kicking off our annual book drive called Pages of Promise this month. We are asking for books or donations for books for students in the Jackson Public Schools (click for wish list) and the Canton Public Schools (click for wish list). Donated books can be dropped off at each of these school district offices, each of their schools, and United Way’s office.

Research shows that students who do not read over the summer break can lose reading skills and will start the next school year behind their peers who do read. Thank you for helping us stop summer learning loss for kids whose parents cannot buy books for them.

Thank you for helping put a smile on Michael’s face. Because you give to United Way, we were able to host State Testing Workshops, which helped many students like Michael clear a hurdle to graduation. United Way’s VITA coalition will continue to file taxes free of charge at all of our tax sites until the end of tax season. And, we’re having a special tax event this Saturday, April 6th at the Medgar Evers Library (10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.). Bring your photo ID, your original Social Security cards, and your tax documents, and we’ll help you keep your ENTIRE refund.

MS Division of Medicaid takes the trophy again!

Each year our state agencies compete for the best Annual Workplace Campaign. This year, United Way is pleased to announce that the Division of Medicaid will proudly display the traveling trophy for the second year in a row. We thank all of our state employees who participated in the 2012 United Way campaign and congratulate Medicaid employees for pulling out a win again this year. Accepting the trophy from United Way’s Tanya Poe (R) are: Executive Director David J. Dzielak, Ph.D., Nancy Jones, Koteshya Guidry, and Erin Barham.

Atmos shows its power in helping community

Atmos Energy recently presented a corporate donation of more than $35,000 to support United Way’s work in the Metro area. Their corporate gift is an addition to their annual campaign, which has always been strongly supported by Atmos employees. United Way will use the donation to support our work in Education, Financial Stability, and Health in Hinds, Madison, and Rankin counties.
