The mission of United Way of the Capital Area is to build a caring community that invests its local resources and energies to improve the quality of life for all residents of Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties.

United Way of the Capital Area kicked off its' annual campaign this morning by asking the question, "IS THE PRICE RIGHT FOR YOUR UNITED WAY." Over 175 community partner representatives came to the Ethnic Heritage Center at the Mississippi Agriculture Museum to celebrate "WHAT MATTERS"

The United Way of the Capital Area is more focused than ever on critical issues in Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties.

•  Financial Stability: Helping hard working, lower income residents build a more financially stable household.

•  2-1-1 Mississippi: Providing needy Mississippians a hot line for immediate referrals.

•  Child & Youth Service: Supporting programs to help the young be better prepared to contribute to our community.

United Way staff invited contestants to come on down and play the "Price is Right for Your United Way". Stuart Kellogg, playing the role of Bob Barker, tested community IQ's with such questions as:

How many calls did 2-1-1 Mississippi receive in its' first year of operation? (answer 34,116 calls)

and How many people were helped through United Way in Hinds, Madison, and Rankin counties? (answer: 36, 343)

The "Showcase Showdown" question revealed the amount of money raised by Pacesetter companies toward this year's campaign? (Answer $1,000,907)

"I was pleased with the turnout and the energy of the kickoff participants", said Ouida Watson, United Way of the Capital Area director Annual Campaign, "We are looking forward to the best campaign ever."

Clinton, Miss. - After a one year hiatus Mississippi College took back the top spot as the most giving college or university in the tri-county area towards the United Way. Mississippi College had the highest participation percentage among its faculty claiming the award back from arch-rival Millsaps during the 2006 Campaign season. Mississippi College's employees raised over 10-thousand dollars last year. Carol Burger, United Way of the Capital Area President/CEO presented the trophy to Dr. Ron Howard Mississippi College's Vice-President of Academic Affairs during a faculty meeting in early October.

MS Children's Home Services raises money for United Way

During the 2007 United Way employee campaign, Mississippi Children's Home Services employees raised $6,950 for United Way of the Capital Area. Marking the finale of a successful employee campaign, Mississippi Children's Home Services presented a check to Carol Burger, President/CEO of the United Way of the Capital Area.

"Mississippi Children's Home Services is a pacesetter organization that continually gives to United Way," said Burger. "The employees at Mississippi Children's Home Services are one-of-a-kind. As a nonprofit which receives some program funding from United Way, Mississippi Children's Home Services is one agency whose employees always financially give back to United Way."

The Mississippi Children's Home Services staff used a unique approach in raising funds for the United Way campaign. Different programs and departments within the agency created baskets around particular themes and filled the baskets with various items. For example, one basket promised a night on the town with restaurant gift certificates and a limo ride, another basket offered the entertainment package with a basket full of gift certificates to Best Buy and Blockbuster, and another basket is a gardener's delight, full of gardening supplies, planting tools and more. Employees made their financial pledges by purchasing raffle tickets for the drawing.

Mississippi Children's Home Services is a nonprofit that provides social and behavioral health services to youth, adolescents and families throughout the state as well as in the Jackson metro area. United Way of the Capital Area and Mississippi Children's Home Services work together to better children's lives in the metro Jackson area.

Established in 1912, Mississippi Children's Home Services served over 10,000 individuals statewide in 2006 alone. Through its affiliates, Mississippi Children's Home Society and CARES Center, Inc., the agency offers an array of programs including adoption; psychiatric residential treatment; therapeutic group homes; foster care; children's shelters; special education; home-based services; and peer prevention education. JC PENNEY employees sponsor back to school family

Jackson - August means back-to-school sales in the retail business. Thousands of school children and their parents flocked to Metro Area stores this past weekend buying new clothes, backpacks and other related items to get ready for the new school year. Over 200 associates at JC Penney thought it was time to give back to a family that is struggling to walk that financial tightrope before classes begin.

Brandy Thrash and her store manager Ron Varnardo came up with the idea of donating all the supplies a family would need for the upcoming school year. Through the United Way of the Capital Area and its community partner Operation Shoestring Laurine Smith and her four children were picked. The Smith family participates in United Way's StampOut/DropOut program. "Ms. Smith is a single mother raising these four children on her own. She has made a tremendous change in her attitude towards her children's education since she joined the program", said Vickie Carter Jackson, Dir. of the SODO program.

Each of Smith's four children, Felicia 14, Dequan 11, Shantiece 7, and Jacquaris 6, received three outfits a piece, a backpack, shoes and socks and of course school supplies.

"We just wanted to help someone that needed it and just to make the children get off to a good school year," said Thrash, Sales Manager at JC Penny Northpark.

The StampOut/DropOut program targets 50 at-risk families in the mid-town area in hopes of lowering the problematic dropout rate before kids reach high school age. The program's focus includes teaching social and emotional development skills, health and nutrition, and literacy to all of the participants.

"Ms. Smith has done the most of our parents since the program began. She attends all the meetings and is heavily involved. Choosing her and her family was a way to reward her for efforts," said Jackson.
