A Day In The Life from United Way of Jackson on Vimeo.

From August 28 through September 5, United Way’s 2-1-1 Mississippi staffers and volunteers fielded more than 10,000 calls from those affected by Hurricane Gustav. This is the first natural disaster for which United Way’s 2-1-1 Mississippi functioned as the official disaster call center.
“United Way’s 2-1-1 Mississippi has worked very well, thanks to the incredible dedication of the team that runs the call center and the volunteers who lent their hands and hearts, says Blake Wilson, President of the Mississippi Economic Council.
“This experience gave us confidence that United Way’s 2-1-1 Mississippi can function as the communication center for the state during a catastrophic disaster,” says Carol Burger, President of United Way of the Capital Area.
Marsha Meeks Kelly with the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Services was one of the leaders in this collaborative effort to use United Way’s 2-1-1 Mississippi as the state’s crisis communication service.
Other organizations that joined the collaboration include: Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, MS Commission for Volunteer Services, AmeriCorps, Mississippi Economic Council, MS Division of Medicaid, MS Department of Finance and Administration, the Secretary of State’s Office, MS Center for Non Profits, and the MS Restaurant and Hospitality Association.
