
New Initiative Started
The African American Women Health Initiative is a group of diverse women who got together and decided to address healthcare and other issues relating to young African American females in our community. The advisory board members are: Danita Joyner, Dr. Jasmin Chapman, Debra Gibbs, Dr. Geraldine Chaney-Buie, Carol Burger, Cynthia Stimley, Rica Lewis-Payton, Sharon Reed, Karen Livingston-Wilson, Kimberly Sweet, Gwen Taylor and Katrina Fayne.
Some of the ladies recently traveled to Atlanta to meet with Dr. Waine Kong, Phd, JD - Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Black Cardiologist, Inc. The purpose of the visit was to obtain support from Dr. Kong and his staff on our first intiative, obesity among 12-15 year olds.

BAHOU GOES ON "BREAK" FOR UNITED WAY
Lake Charles , LA. — Putting his time where his mouth is, Tony Bahou immersed himself in volunteerism, by leading a group of college students on an Alternative Spring Break.
Bahou is the United Way of the Capital Area's Vice President of Community Relations and Marketing. But instead of just sending out a press release on the United Way's Alternative Spring Break, he joined eleven other “team” leaders for the United Way 's ASB 2007 program in Lake Charles Louisiana last week. The group led an additional 55 college students on various rebuilding projects throughout southwest Louisiana .

Jackson , Miss. – The United Way of the Capital area along with Lutheran-Episcopal Services in Mississippi held the second annual Mardi Gras party for Hurricane Katrina Survivors that are still living in the Jackson Metro Area on February 20, 2007. 250 celebrated “FAT TUESDAY” at Freelon's Bar and Groove. It was a family-friendly party with kids decorating masks and wearing the traditional mardi gras beads.
