Community Schools

In collaboration with Walton Elementary, a designated Community School, United Way of the Capital Area supports food security by providing 100 students with fresh, nutritious meals to take home each week. This initiative plays a vital role in promoting student health, academic success, and overall well-being beyond the school day.

The Good Project

United Way of the Capital Area (UWCA) is addressing food insecurity in a Hinds County community through a collaborative initiative focused on self-sufficiency and healthy living. The program educates residents on how to grow their own food, prepare nutritious meals, and make informed financial decisions while grocery shopping.

This initiative was developed in partnership with Atmos Energy, We Are One United Methodist Church, and the Alcorn State University 4-H Program, combining resources and expertise to support long-term community resilience and well-being.
 

The Blackburn Learning Garden

The Blackburn Learning Garden offers students a hands-on opportunity to experience the full cycle of agricultural education—from cultivation to commerce. Through this community garden initiative, students grow their own crops and the opportunity to sell their produce locally, gaining valuable skills in agriculture, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.

Health & Wellness Campaign [Healthy & Fit in 2026- Partnership with YMCA]

In partnership with the YMCA, United Way of the Capital Area successfully hosted the 'Healthy and Alive in 2025' health campaign. The initiative featured nutrition workshops, fitness classes, health screenings, and additional activities designed to promote wellness and empower community members to lead healthier lives.

Over 300 students from Hinds, Madison, and Rankin counties gained valuable insights into effective strategies for addressing health disparities across Mississippi. The event also provided a unique opportunity for students to connect and engage with a diverse network of health professionals.
